Dopo Come Back, Africa, On the Bowery e Good Times, Wonderful Times, il progetto di recupero dell'opera di Lionel Rogosin giunge con Black Roots al suo quarto ca­pitolo. Come per i film precedenti, Rogosin non si adagia su schemi precostituiti, ma reinventa ancora una volta le forme del suo cinema, nella convinzione che ogni opera sia una sorta di organismo unico, nutrito da luoghi, persone e storie peculiari. Quel­la che rimane immutata è la necessità ur­gente di calare il cinema nelle pieghe più distorte della contemporaneità, per far vi­brare una presa di posizione netta contro le derive fasciste, repressive e distruttive del nostro vivere sociale. Black Roots fa conversare a briglia sciolta cinque afroa­mericani attorno al tavolo di un caffè: tra ricordi familiari, osservazioni sul presente e precise volontà di rovesciare le ingiusti­zie, emerge un quadro potentissimo dove si intersecano orgoglio nero, rabbia, scora­mento, buonumore, combattività e bellez­za. Siccome i personaggi in questione sono anche musicisti eccezionali, e si prestano a lunghe performance improvvisate, il film è anche l'occasione per ascoltare ottima musica che affonda le proprie radici nella cultura dei neri d'America.

After Come Back, Africa, On the Bowery, and Good Times, Wonderful Times, the res­toration of Lionel Rogosin's films reaches its fourth chapter with Black Roots. As with his previous films, Rogosin does not depend on preconceived ideas but rein­vents the form of his cinema with the con­viction that every piece of work is a kind of unique organism, nourished by particular places, people, and stories. What remains unchanged is his need to take cinema into the deepest folds of the contemporary world - to take a position against the fas­cist, repressive, and destructive drifting of our social lives. Black Roots gets a group of five African Americans talking around a café table: among family memories, obser­vations about the present, and the desire to reverse injustices emerges a powerful pic­ture of black pride, anger, discouragement, mirth, combativeness, and beauty. As the characters are all excellent musicians who put on long improvised performances, the film is also an occasion to hear the wonder­ful music that thrives throughout American black culture.

Una sto­ria orale che utilizza il canto, storie dolci e amare per illustrare i problemi dei neri americani nell'America dei bianchi. Bitter Sweet Stories - Talking about Black Ro­ots è un documentario sulla lavorazione di Black Roots e ne esplora l'ispirazione e il processo creativo. Attraverso interviste a Ruth Schell, sua montatrice per questo film, e a Jim Collier, uno dei protagonisti, ci offre una nuova prospettiva sull'opera di Rogosin e un assaggio della vita delle persone che animarono il film. Scopriamo chi sono, perché hanno raccontato la loro storia e come si sono ritrovati sul set con Lionel Rogosin.

Black Roots, Lionel Rogosin's fourth film is aimed at revealing the black experience in 1970s America. It is a unique oral histo­ry that uses song and bittersweet stories to illustrate the difficulties of black peo­ple living in a white America. Bitter Sweet Stories Talking about Black Roots is a do­cumentary about the making of Rogosin's film. It further explores his creative process and inspiration. With interviews featuring Ruth Schell the editor of Black Roots, and Jim Collier one of the participants in the film, it gives us a new perspective on Ro­gosin's work and a peak into the lives of the people featured in the original Black Roots film. We find out who these figures are, why they told their stories and how they found their way onto Rogosin's set.
