II ventitreenne Karl Anton, che sarebbe in seguito diventato una figura di spicco del cinema ceco, scelse per il suo primo film un soggetto assai difficile. Gli zingari, scritto nel 1835 dal primo poeta ceco moderno, Karel Hynek Mácha, è un romanzo breve ma molto complesso. Anton, che scrisse anche la sceneggiatura, mantenne molta della narrazione di Mácha. L'intero prologo ha luogo a Venezia, dove i cineasti trascorsero molti giorni; la storia, ambientata in Boemia, fu girata nel suggestivo paesaggio di Kokorˇín e nei dintorni autentici noti a Mácha. I critici riconobbero subito il contributo artistico dato dal film alla cinematografia ceca. Per anni Cikáni fu noto solo in versione accorciata, lunga circa 1800-1900 metri, laddove la lunghezza originale, stando ai documenti della censura, era di 2400 metri. Per questo restauro sono stati utilizzati quattro elementi: due su pellicola nitrato e due che erano già stati ristampati su acetato. Una copia nitrato virata e una copia imbibita di prima generazione con didascalie in ceco erano le più lunghe, con 2020 metri. II secondo elemento su nitrato era il negativo originale, che consisteva di frammenti non assemblati con didascalie segnate in ceco e tedesco. Da questo materiale è stata ricostruita una nuova copia, per una lunghezza totale di 2426 metri, imbibita e virata dopo la stampa.

The 23-year-old Karl Anton, who was subsequently to become a significant figure in Czech cinema, chose a very difficult subject for his first film. Gypsies, written in 1835 by the first modern Czech poet, Karel Hynek Mácha, is a short but very complex novel. Anton, who also wrote the script, retained most of Mácha's narrative. The entire prologue takes place in Venice,where the filmmakers spent many days; the plot set in Bohemia was shot in an evocative Kokorˇín landscape, and in the authentic surroundings known to Mácha. Critics immediately recognized the film's contribution to the art of Czech cinematography. For years Gypsies was known only in a shortened version of around 1800-1900 metres, whereas its original length, according to censorship records, was 2400 metres. Four elements were used for this restoration: two on nitrate stock, and two that had already been reprinted on acetate. A toned nitrate print and a tinted first-generation copy with Czech intertitles were the longest, at 2020 metres. The second nitrate element was the original negative, consisting of unassembled fragments with Czech and German cued intertitles. A new copy was reconstructed from this material, with a total length of 2426 metres. It was subjected to the process of tinting and toning after being printed.
