Tratto da un romanzo (Three Godfathers) del popolare e prolifico Peter B. Kyne, Kin­dred of the Dust fu l'ultimo film di Walsh come produttore indipendente e anche l'ultimo girato con la prima moglie, Mi­riam Cooper, conosciuta e sposata quando entrambi erano sotto contratto con D.W. Griffith. Il film conserva un deciso sapore griffithiano, con Cooper (la "Donna senza amici" di Intolerance) che interpreta Nan of the Sawdust Pile, una derelitta che tor­na nella città natale, centro di commercio del legname nel Nord-Ovest del Pacifico, dopo un matrimonio fallito e con un figlio a carico. La buona notizia è che il ricco fidanzatino dell'infanzia (Ralph Graves) è ancora innamorato di lei; la cattiva notizia è che la famiglia di lui non vuole sentir parlare della donna. La direzione artistica è opera di un giovane William Cameron Menzies, alla terza collaborazione con Walsh prima di giungere al successo con The Thief of Bagdad nel 1924.

Based on a novel by the prolific and popu­lar Peter B. Kyne (Three Godfathers), Kin­dred of the Dust was Walsh's last film as an independent producer and his last with his first wife, Miriam Cooper, whom he had met and married when both were under contract to D.W. Griffith. The film retains a distinct, Griffith-like flavor, with Cooper (the fallen 'Friendless One' in Intolerance) cast as Nan of the Sawdust Pile, a waif who returns to her home in a Pacific Northwest logging town after a failed marriage, an in­fant son in tow. Luckily, her wealthy child­hood sweetheart (Ralph Graves) is still in love with her; unluckily, his family will hear nothing of a union with such a woman. The art direction is the work of a young William Cameron Menzies, in his third assignment for Walsh before his professional break­through with The Thief of Bagdad in 1924.
